ABOUT 30 years ago my parents and my mom's parents bought a house together somewhere in rural Massachusetts. Since my grandmother couldn't manage the stairs, my grandparents lived downstairs, and my parents and my sibs (I wasn't born yet) lived upstairs.
My grandmother wasn't terribly well, and one winter, she had a terrible case of pneumonia. There was a snowstorm that night, and my grandfather called a priest and an ambulance. She was exhausted; she would sit down in a rocking chair to rest, but before long she couldn't breathe. So she would get up, pace the floor for a while, but would eventually tire out and go back to the rocker. The snowstorm was really bad; the priest beat the ambulance there, and she died that night.
Not long afterward, my parents and grandfather sold the house and moved to a neighboring town. The people who bought the place had a few children also.
About two years ago, there was a big family reunion, and, as it turns out, a cousin of mine was dating one of the kids of the people who bought the house, and the young couple were at the reunion. At length, my cousin's date asked my parents, since they mentioned having lived there, if they knew about the ghost. "What ghost?" asked my father. "Well, in the first floor living room, every once in a while, we'll hear footsteps across the floor, pacing...and one time, we had a rocking chair in the room...we took it out because the chair would start rocking when the pacing stopped, then the chair would stop and the pacing would start back up..." After the reunion, someone gave my cousin's date a picture of my grandmother, which they hung up in the living room...AND IT NEVER HAPPENED AGAIN.
