This isn't terribly spooky, but it's true:
I live in a house that my ex-husband and I had built in 1988. Where the house is built used to be farmland. Since it was such a new house I didn't think it could be haunted, but I'm beginning to wonder. One of my favorite ways to relax after all the children go to bed is to take a bath by candlelight and just relax with some incense burning, etc. For the past two years (ever since my ex left) I've heard the sound of the downstairs door slamming, then someone coming up the stairs. Being the only adult in the house with sleeping children, I always get up and go to the door and yell down to see what it was or if it's my oldest daughter coming home, but nobody is ever there.
I frequently hear this sound while I'm in the shower also, though I can't hear footsteps then, just the slamming door. Two or three times the CD player downstairs has come on full blast even though nobody was downstairs at the time, and it was in the middle of the night both times. Things are missing all the time, then they turn up somewhere I've already looked later.
In addition to the noises, my oldest daughter (17) and I have both felt like something passes us on the stairs from time to time, my cat freaks out for no apparent reason at odd times.
One night not long ago my 7 year old was lying on my bed with me reading and she looked at the wall by the window and said "who's that?" I looked, not knowing what I'd find, but there was nothing there. I asked her what she meant and she said "he was sitting there watching us." I was starting to get spooked at this point and asked her to describe him. She pointed out what he looked at, and she was pointing at one of my gargoyle candleholders on the dressing table, you know the ones that are everywhere these days. This particular daughter also frequently says things like "the ghosts are playing with the Crazy Daisy (a water toy) in the backyard", and things like that.
Sometimes I feel a little spooked in the house, but I think whatever is there is either protecting us or guiding us in some way. Before my husband left the air in my house was oppressive and heavy, but it got better immediately on his exit. Two of my friends who are heavily into spiritualism say they feel something in the house is not right, but they feel it's not negative, just restless. At first I thought some of his negative energy stayed behind when he left, but now I don't know what to think since my daughter is seeing things. In any event, I'm trying to sell the house so that I can move into an old Victorian up the road about ten miles (in the same family for 100 years, and I'm hoping it's haunted but know I'll probably be terrified if it is), and even though we've had about 30 families look at our house, nobody wants to buy it for some reason. My real estate even told me that one couple came in and wouldn't even go upstairs, saying that they were scared, and they demanded to leave quickly. I figured maybe they were born again Christians and my gargoyle candleholders scared them or something.
Thank you for reading this, and sorry for the length!
