Subject: A brush with the Ku Klux Klan (Ouija board experience)
As a naive kid, I was absolutely facinated by the paranomal, thinking that I could be the next Poltergeist girl talking to her tv set, or even feel myself float over my bed like the kid from The Excorcist. Call me sick, hey, I was little. Anyhow, this sort of "obsession" led me to spend thirty of my hard earned dollars on a Ouija board that I spotted in Toys R' Us. So, being the fanatic that I was, I snatched it up and bought it.
When I got home, I called up my best friend- we'll call her Jenny- and told her to haul her butt over to my house so we can "invoke the spirits". She did so..very quickly might I add. She was as excited about it as I was. Now, mind you, we were only in the sixth grade, so we were pretty damn uneducated about the paranormal in general, and the only instructions we had to use the Ouija is the ones that Milton Bradley gave us.
We lit my room up with candles, Jenny was so excited that she managed to spend the night. So we embarked on a night of talking to the dead. I remember we sat in the middle of my room with candles around us in a circle, we were oh-so-mysterious that way. We had the setting, we were ready. Both of us placed the board on our laps, like the instructions said to, and put our fingers lightly on the planchette. I remember I was asking the questions..this is as far as I remember:
Me: Are there any spirits in the room?
Ouija: YES
Me: Who are you?
Ouija: NBF
Me: What's your first name?
Ouija: NATHANIAL
Me: Is the 'B' your middle name?
Ouija: NO
Me: Then what is it for?
Ouija: BEDFORD
Me: Bedford? Then what's your last name?
Ouija: FORREST
Right then I stopped, Nathanial Bedford Forrest.. that name was *extremly* familiar to me, even in my sixth grade year. So I asked. You may be wondering how I remember this so well.. I was a smart little kid. I had written all this down in a jounal.
Me: Who are you?
Ouija: NBF
Me: Why are you here?
Ouija: I LIVE HERE
Me: You live in my house?
Ouija: YOUR ROOM
Me: (quite worried now) You live in my room?
Ouija: YES
Me: Before you died, did you do anything special?
Ouija: YES
Me: What did you do?
Ouija: KKK
Me: Ku Klux Klan
Ouija: YOUR SMART FOR A LITTLE GIRL (I'm not kidding, it really said that)
Me: I did a report on the KKK for school before.
Ouija: I KNOW
Me: Is that when you moved in?
Ouija: YES
Me: How did you come here?
Ouija: BOOK ( I had borrowed a ton of books for my report, I figure this is
what he meant)
Me: I don't understand.
Ouija: DONT WORRY. I'M HERE
.
Me: Do you not like blacks?
Ouija: WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Me: No? ( A bit meekly)
Ouija: SMART
This went on for a long time, and finally, I became outraged at NBF's hatred toward African-Americans. I began to curse at him, I realize now that I shouldn't have done this. The planchette began to go crazy, spinning in frantic figure eights and circles and then all of a sudden, stopped. I looked at Jenny, scared out of my mind. She had this blank stare on her face, like she was looking right through me. I started yelling at her to wake up, to snap out of it. Then I looked down to her hands. They were shaking.... violently. The shaking was travling from her hands to her arms, and by the time it got up to her elbows, Jenny started to panic. I yelled at her to stop, she yelled back that she wasn't doing anything. That's when I freaked out. Jenny slowly picked up the planchette with her trembling hands, involuntarily, mind you. She tilted it up with the point of the planchette pointing toward the ceiling, and she placed it on her head. I looked at her, trying to figure out what she was doing. Jenny could only whisper, "I don't know." After that happened, everything sort of went back to normal. I got up, needing a drink, and left the room. Jenny stayed for some reason.
A few second later I heard screaming coming from my room. I ran back and Jenny looked terrified. She said that she had seen a tiny man dressed in a KKK outfit, wearing the pointed hat. Right then, I knew what the planchette on top of her head was. It was the hat! I turned pale and stared at the Ouija. I couldn't believe what was happening.
The next morning, Jenny and I decided to try again. When we asked if anyone was there, the planchette automatically spun to YES. And without questioning it spelled out NBF over and over again. We told him to leave, he spelled NO. We asked if he was alone, he said NO. He stated that there were 10,000 others with him, and that they weren't leaving. Today, I hightly doubt that there were 10,000 spirits in my house, but then, I was mortified. I packed up the board and didn't use it for a very long time.
I've been 'haunted' all through my life with feelings of someone being with me, of someone watching over my shoulder, and of whispers coming from random corners of my house at night. I regret using the Ouija when I was little without knowing what I was doing. I now know that I never closed the board properly through years of childhood use. Maybe that's why I've had so many bizarre experiences. You be the judge.
