When my mother was a young girl, she lived right down the street from her grandmother and visited frequently -- very often staying overnight. Her grandmother's house was a three-story Victorian that she was able to maintain only because her two sons, my mother's uncles, still lived with her. One night when my mother was about 15 or 16 her parents had to go out of town for a few days. It was in the spring and school was still in session, so my mother could not accompany them because it would mean missing school and it was final exam time. So it was arranged that my mom would stay with her grandmother. Now her grandmother's room was on the first floor of the big house, her two uncles had rooms on the second, and she had one of three rooms on the third floor. Mom had visited her grandmother's home so many times, that she knew every nook and cranny, and had never quite gotten over the fact that the upstairs made her feel creepy any time she was ever in there. Well, one ! ! night her two uncles went out with friends and grandmother went to bed at nine thirty. Mom had to study, so she forced herself to sit at the desk in her bedroom and try to put her uneasiness out of her mind. But she couldn't. She kept telling herself that she was being silly, but everytime she tried to read she felt like someone was standing behind her looking over her shoulder. She finally moved from the desk to sit on her bed, but the feeling did not go away. She decided to go to bed, but was too freaked out to go to bed in that room. She gathered up her robe and put her feet into her slippers and went out into the dark hallway. Quickly, she went down the hall, still with this creepy feeling that someone was behind her. then she went down the stairs, past the second floor landing, and down to the kitchen, where the staircase came out. Here was a small light left on for her two uncles, and here she glanced back to reassure herself that no one was really following he! ! r. She crossed the kitchen and went back a narrow and dark hall that led to her grandmother's room. She opened her grandmother's door and tiptoed in. The moon shining into the room gave a little light Her grandmother sat up and called out asking who was there.

"It's just me, Granny," Mom answered. "Can I sleep with you?"

To which grandma answered, "Yes, Dear, of course you can. But who else is that with you?"

According to all in the family -- it really happened!
