Subject: ghost experiences in South Mississippi
First, let me apologize for sending this directly to you. I am a member of the ghost-stories "ghost stories of the day" list and absolutely love it! I am leaving my present job this week and wanted to tell some of my experiences before I left (when I leave, I will no longer have access to email).
So, here goes:
(All of these accounts are from an ex-boyfriend of mine, except the last one. At the time that they happened, he and I were together. This post is a little long, it is comprised of numerouse accounts).
My boyfriend lived in an old house outside of Poplarville, Mississippi. WAY outside of Poplarville. The house was a small three bedroom, one bath house. While he and I were together, numerous accounts that we can not explain happened. We were together for about 5 years. The following accounts are not in a time line, I'm just going to put them down as I can remember them. For ease of writing, I will call my boyfriend "Shane". His family consisted of himself, his younger sister, Mom and Stepdad.
"Child Playing Tag":
Shane was outside mowing the yard, when he heard someone running up behind him. He decided that it was his sister playing around and ignored her. After several minutes of hearing the running, the mower died. As he tried to crank it, he felt a light tap on his shoulder. He turned around and saw nobody. He figured that it was his sister running and hiding. He again heard the running, this time accompanied by a child's laughter and once more the tap of his shoulder. He turned, and found no one. After the third time this happened, he ran into the house expecting to find his sister inside laughing and out of breath. Instead, she was sitting on the couch watching tv, where she said she had been the entire time.
"Strange Light":
One night, the family sat down in the living room to watch a movie. The only light that was lit was the hall light and the glow from the tv. Sitting on the couch, the Mom asked if anyone could see what she could. Shane looked up in the direction that she was staring. On the wall next to the tv was a light. It was round like the shine of a flashlight. The light was slowly moving along the wall. Now the strange part, was that the light was going "behind" the bookshelves, the pictures, and various other items along that wall. It looked as if the light was coming from inside the wall, not in the room where they were. After the light reached the end of the wall, the Mom got up and turned on the ceiling light. The light from the wall disappeared. No one could explain why it was there. I know what you may be thinking.... there was no one outside, and no cars had passed by.
"Antics":
The house had a "personality" that liked to play with the tv, in particular. The tv would turn on when no one was in the room, especially late at night and with the volume turned all the way up (Shane had a habit of going to sleep with the tv on so his mother tended to blame this on him). The tv would also start to flip channels slowly then stopping on a channel when no one had the remote in their hand.
"Redecorating the Kitchen":
For this story, I'll need to explain how this family kept the house locked. The front door was always locked when no one was home, but the back door always remained unlocked. They never locked it. I'm not sure why, I never asked. Shane arrived home from work one day and saw that no one was home. He had his hands full and went to the back door to go in so that he wouldn't have to dig out his keys. When he tried to open the door, it was locked. Thinking this was very strange, he was extremely cautious when he opened the door. The back door opened directly into the kitchen. When he walked in all of the cabinet doors were open and the drawers pulled all of the way out. This included the oven and refrigerator doors. He immediately thought that there was a burgular in the house and searched it. No one was there and nothing was missing. Upon returning to the kitchen, he noticed that all of the glasses were right side up in the cabinet. They had always placed them upside down.
A few minutes later, his mom and sister drove up. He went outside furious at them for playing such a trick on him. They had no idea what he was talking about. When he explained and took them to the kitchen, they were shocked. When they had left a few hours before, everything was the way that it should be and the back door was unlocked.
"Sister's dreams":
Shane's sister had a room by herself. She was about 14 years old when she started having very strange dreams. The dreams would all be different but with the same theme, she is in a crowd of people like at a parade or concert. But in all of her dreams, she would turn around and there would be an old woman staring at her. The sight of this woman would make her wake up screaming in fear.
One night, she started to go to sleep when her dog (who was on the bed with her) started growling at the wall. She turned in his direction and saw nothing. She figured there was a cat outside the window, and told him to be quite. He only started to growl louder and then started walking around the edge of the bed, as if following someone! As he was on her side of the bed, he started barking and trying to bite whatever it was he was seeing. She ran out of the room and slept with her parents that night.
The next night or two, she was again sleeping in her own room. She awakened one night to see the old woman in her dreams standing at the foot of her bed staring at her. She was too frightened to move, but screamed for help. Her family came running in and Shane searched the house to see if anyone was there. No one but them. She then began sleeping only in her parents room at night and wouldn't go in the room alone.
"Psychic Aunt":
Shane's aunt had a knack for "knowing" things. I don't think she ever claimed to be psychic, but she had a kind of sixth sense about things. Shane's mother called her and asked her to come for a visit, knowing about her talent. She did not explain everything that had been going on, but only told her that the house had a definite "personality". Well, the aunt decided to visit (she had never been to their house before).
When she arrived she came up to the front porch and the mom greeted her. The aunt asked where her roses were, they smelled absolutely beautiful! The mom was confused and said that she has not ever had roses grown at their house. The aunt came inside and spent the afternoon. Nothing strange happened while she was there, although she did state that there was a presence. At least one. An old woman.
After she left, Shane asked their only neighbor that lived close, if he knew anything about the past owners of the house. The man told him, not really, just that a woman used to live there until she passed away of old age. He remembers her name was Rose and that she used to have the most beautiful roses growing in the front yard. He said that on a windy day, he could smell their wonderful scent sitting on his own front porch.
"My personal experience":
Shane and I tended to stay at his house very late at night. Usually, we would go to his room to talk since watching tv would disturb his family. One night we were in his room, as usual talking about how our days had gone and what our plans were for the weekend and such. Shane had been working all day and was really tired. I told him to go to sleep and that I will wake him in about an hour. We turned off the light, set the alarm, and went to bed. He almost immediately fell asleep. I layed there listening to him sleep and turned my back to him. I heard someone whisper my name very softly. I turned around to him, but he was still asleep. I figured he was talking in his sleep. I turned away again and laid back down. I again heard the whisper. This time it was a little louder and had an urgency to it. I am terrified of bugs and if Shane was trying to get my attention without alarming me, this is the type of voice he would use. I turned slowly, thinking that there was a spider nearby and he was trying to warn me. He was still asleep. I started to feel a little uneasy at this point. I did not turn away from him, I watched him sleep. It was then when I heard someone scream out my name. It sounded like someone right next to me and was so loud that I nearly fell out of bed. The voice was no longer a whisper and no longer sounded like Shane. It was the most horrifying evil thing I have ever heard. The only way that I can describe it is this... it sounded like pure evil.
I woke Shane up and told him to put his shoes on, we were leaving. Of course, I was crying and shaking so bad Shane was worried to death. He kept asking me what was wrong. I only told him that we have to go NOW. I know it sounds silly, but I kept thinking that if I told him what scared me while we were still in that house, something terrible would happen to both of us. He had one shoe on and I was dragging him out to the car. No one else had awakened. After leaving, it was several miles before I felt "safe" enough to pull over and tell him what I heard. I could never again go to that room alone or in the dark.
Since this, Shane and I have gone our seperate ways. I don't know if his family is still living there, or if he had ever dug into the history of it a little more. Hope you enjoyed the stories!
