For those of you unfamilar with the Civil War, Sharpsburg was the bloodiest day in American History. On that September day we loss between 22,000 and 26,000 men combined from the Yankees and Confederacy. In any case I was with 3 other friends and simply cruising along that night. We had somehow decided that touring the battlefield at night would be interesting simply because it was a beautifully preserved historic battlefield with the mountains in the background and qaint town behind us.

Anyway it was about 2 or 3am and we were going down the road passing the north woods headed toward the cornfield. It was at the Cornfield that troops under General Jackson (CSA) was attacked by Gen. Hooker(USA) and pushed back. General Hood (CSA) countered attacked and pushed General Hooker Back and thus did the early part of the day go one. With finally 3 Union attacks upon General Hood by Gen. Hooker, General Mansfield and General Sumner. By the end of the day the corn, which had been higher than a man was cut lower than the heel of a mans boot due to the musket fire and seesaw bayonet charges.[Sorry about the History lesson but I thought you might want to know how bloody that part of the battle was.]

While traveling down that road at approximately 30mph we saw a line of men crossing the road about 200yds away from us. Not wishing to hit them or frightened them I slowed down. As I was slowing down my friend (Jason) made me aware that those people were dressed in Civil War Uniforms. As I got closer I could also see they were in Civil War kit. I really thought nothing about it since reenactors do reenactions all the time. The thing was that as I got to within 50-75yds of them they dissappeared before us. I mean the people on the road just faded out.

Stopping the car we got out and looked about a bit but saw nor heard anything. There must have been at least 100 people moving across the road at that time and you just can't hide the sound of that many people so quickly. We were never scared but more confused since we used to go up there quite often and never saw anything like that before in our life. When we got back to my home I looked up the battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam) and found out that it was fought on Sept 17th, 1862. The night we saw this was Sept 17th, 1992!

Strange but true.
