I have never seen a ghost myself but here is a collection of experiences told to me by friends.
One person I know claims to be living with a ghost in her house right now. The ghost is an old man, very ordinary looking, who is usually seen in the back of the house. Everyone, with the exception of the only male member of the household, has seen the old man. In several instances the sighting of the ghost has been a precursor to bad things befalling family members. One time the mother got sick, one time an aunt died, and one time my friend and her sister were badly hurt in a car accident after having seen him. My friend said she was driving once and looked in her rearview mirror only to see the ghost sitting in the backseat. When she turned around he was gone (this was a different incident than the car accident). The ghost has a melancholy expression and wears a pink shirt and gray pants. My friend has lived in the house since she was a child and, as far as she knows, no one has ever died there.
When I was attending college I rented a house off campus. My mother was helping me move in and we were sitting on the couch in the living room. All of a sudden my mother looked past me with a strange expression. I asked her what was wrong and she said she had just seen a woman walk from the kitchen to the back bedroom. She described the woman as having long black hair and wearing a long white, old-fashioned dress. We went into the bedroom and, even though it was summertime, the bedroom was noticeably cooler than the rest of the house. I never saw the ghost and I didn't tell my roommate about the incident until the day we were moving out (I knew she wouldn't stay if she knew about it and I couldn't afford the rent alone).
When I was a kid our next door neighbor told me that he had seen a ghost in his house one night. He said he woke up and saw a small blue light floating through the room. The light eventually made it's way to the window and, as it passed in front of the window, he could see the sillouette of a woman. The light and woman then vanished.
I was talking to a woman who worked in a group home for mentally retarded individuals. The home has to have a staff person there during the night. She said that while she was there one night she saw a ghost pass through an adjoining room and then the papers on her desk began to blow as though caught by a stray breeze.
My mother told me that she had a friend whose daughter died unexpectedly. The daughter played the piano. One night the mother and father heard the piano playing the song the daughter always practiced. They went downstairs and the music continued even though there was no one to be seen at the piano. No word on whether or not the keys could be seen moving by themselves.
One of my friends was really close to her grandfather and after he died she was really upset and grieving. She said she was taking a nap in her room the day after his funeral and she woke up to see her grandfather standing over her. She said she would have thought it was just a dream, but then he reached out and touched her arm. His touch was cold but he was smiling and she said she got such a wonderful sense of peace at that moment and was not sad anymore.
People love to tell their stories about incidents like this, if you haven't tried it ask your friends and family for their stories. You might be surprised at what you hear if you are willing to keep an open mind.
