VW Guardian Angel

It was the early 70's during the Energy Crisis when we had to endure "odd/even" days to buy gasoline. For anyone who may not know, you bought gasoline on an odd or even numbered day based on your license plate number. My best friend had moved and left an old trunk with me to deliver to her sister in VA Beach. At the time I was driving a VW beetle that was so good with her gas consumpion that the odd/even mess barely affected me.

On a beautiful Fall Saturday I decided to make the 100 mile trip to deliver the trunk. By taking the back seat out of the car I had plenty of room to cram the trunk into the car. The weather was perfect and the idea of going to the beach was inviting but I couldn't find anyone who wanted to ride along. With a full tank of gas, I struck out alone fully looking forward to an enjoyable day.

Traffic was light and I made excellent time getting to my friend's sister's house. We unloaded the trunk and as a thank you for delivering the trunk, she took me out to lunch. Since I was totally on my own that day I drove along the beach road and took my time enjoying the weather and ocean. Before I realized it the day was gone and I was a hundred miles from home. I was totally relaxed and looked forward to the drive.

Soon after I drove through the tunnel headed West I was treated to a beautiful sunset. It was like someone had turned off the lights. I had not even considered the affect of the energy crisis. There was very little traffic and the lights that you normally see from an interstate were abscent. I still had over a half of tank of gas and the car was running great. The only lights were the twin VW headlights. The speedlimit was 65 so I was driving about 75 and in a VW it feels like you're flying. About 90 miles from home I started feeling a draft on the back of my neck. It was cool enough to be uncomfortable. Since I had the highway to myself I was driving in the right lane and then the left lane just for the hell of it. The draft was there in the right lane but went away when I drifted into the left lane.

That fact finally dawned on me as being strange. I stopped the car and checked all the windows including the back vents. Everything was shut up tight. Back on the road again, I tested the draft theory again. It was still there and even worse than before. It was so bad that driving in the right lane was miserable. I just gave up trying to drive on the right and stayed in the left lane and zoomed along in the intense darkness. There were no lights anywhere and I realized there hadn't been any oncoming cars for a while. It felt like I was alone in a dark world.

There was nothing frightening about the situation but merely normal details I just hadn't had any reason to think about. About five miles from home I passed the dark mass of a broken down car in the right lane. At 70 miles an hour I passed the other car before it really registered on my brain. The car didn't have a single light on and there were no flares, nothing to warn anyone that it was there! The remainder of the trip was uneventful and the "right lane draft" was gone.

I got home safely with a quarter of a tank of gas left. Once I got into my apartment the shakes started. It finally registered that I had been warned of danger almost a hundred miles from where it would have occured. If there are guardian angels, mine was sure working that night.

P.S. I still have the VW and to celebrate "her" 32nd birthday, she's getting a new paint job.

Has anyone else had a similar occurance?
