Paul Verhoeven.net: All About a Unique Director Yes, there is actually another Paul Verhoeven fansite out there. :-) This great site is run by a guy in Holland and features reviews, photos, video downloads, and more. Pretty much everything you could want out of a fansite and it looks better than mine too! When you're done with my site you should definitely head over there.

Optimus Prime Films | Directors | Paul Verhoeven Until paulverhoeven.net went up, this was the only other thing resembling a Paul Verhoeven fan page I could find. There is an essay on Verhoeven here and soundclips, trailers, and images (mostly cover art and posters) from his films. And if you back up a level, there are pages on some other cool directors.

Paul Verhoeven [gonemovies.com] This fan mini-site has a Verhoeven filmography and biography, some cool pictures, and a few film reviews. It's in Dutch so bring your Babelfish if you don't speak the language.

Articles and Interviews

Robbert Blokland Interview A great interview from April 2002. Paul talks about everything--Showgirls, Hollywood, what he may be doing for his next film project, all those other projects left hanging, etc etc. Just go read it! You can also read the interview in the original Dutch at Horror Cypher.

iJunkets #1 at Joe Blo's Movie Emporium This is an interview with Kevin Bacon and Paul Verhoeven from the time of Hollow Man's release. You'll find this interview, originally conducted by iJunkets.com, at various places around the web, sometimes credited properly, other times not. The interview is mainly about the filming of Hollow Man, but there are some other questions asked about digital film technology and the marketing of movies on the internet, etc. It's a pretty good interview all in all, but it's poorly transcripted (all the useless"uhs" and"ands" and pauses are left in) and a bit hard to read as a result. If you've read other interviews about Hollow Man, this is basically the same stuff reiterated... Kevin's hard time with the invisibilty makeup, etc. Still worth checking out though.

Adventures in Extreme Cinema [Metro Times Detroit] Here is another article from the Hollow Man era. Rather than focusing on one film, though, it is more a mini-roundup of Verhoeven's career, and includes his opinions on Robocop and Starship Troopers. It's not a very long article, but it's well-written and positive overall, and there is a lot of info in such a short space. If you're unfamiliar with how Verhoeven feels about his own work, this is probably a good place to start.

Urban Cinefile Feature This interview from the Hollow Man Era (henceforth to be known as HME; I'm getting sick of typing that already) is very amusing. It is written in a more casual tone and Verhoeven's sense of humor and boisterousness come through loud and clear. He talks about adjusting to American sensibilities, about the failure of Showgirls, and his admiration for Hitchcock, among other things. The article gives a lot of Verhoeven's history as a filmmaker, concentrating on his transition to becoming a Hollywood director. Definitely check this out if you're a fan.

Hollow Man: Der Regisseur This is an interview in German. I don't speak enough German (yet) to translate, so I can only tell he's talking about the irony of uptight Americans, Plato and his invisible man theory, and religion again. It does appear that he uses just as many adverbs in German as he does in English. ;-)

Interview Paul Verhoeven This interview is in French. There are some pics on this page of him and Casper Van Dien promoting Starship Troopers. Hey, at least it's not yet another interview about Hollow Man.

The Director's Chair Interviews Paul Verhoeven This interview from the time of Starship Troopers is pretty good. Most of the interview has to do with the fascist themes in the movie, and American reaction to such things. Verhoeven refers to the film as a big budget B movie, and has the great quote"I think the essence of the movie is really young kids fighting giant bugs." Cracked me up, anyway.

Paul Verhoeven's HOLLOW Triumph Most of this article has to do with how the invisibility effects in Hollow Man were achieved. Verhoeven also talks a little bit about the MPAA's ratings of his films and borrowing Kevin Bacon's character motivations from Plato's Republic.

Paul Verhoeven's Hollow Man This is sort of a review of Hollow Man... except the actual review does not come until the very end. The article starts with the sentence"Paul Verhoeven is a psycho" and rails on for quite a while about what a fearless, crazy fellow the director is. It's hard to tell whether the reviewer likes Verhoeven, is afraid of him, or both. There are no real insights here but it's somewhat entertaining to read.

Salon.com People | Paul Verhoeven This is a loooong article for Salon's"Brilliant Careers" series. Pretty much everything you wanted to know about Verhoeven's career, including a look at his European films. The article often focuses on Verhoeven's"obsession" with female power and sexuality, and thus Total Recall and Robocop are only briefly touched on (the writer considers those to be Verhoeven's weakest films). It's a good read, but pretty opinionated and not entirely flattering.

Cinema.com Paul Verhoeven A good, concise biography with equal attention to his Dutch and American eras. There are links to News and Filmography sections, but those aren't very informative.

Neon: Visions of Vegas An interview with Verhoeven mostly about Showgirls. There are some great quotes from him here.

Invisible Ironies This article/interview from the HME is mostly about Hollow Man, but does have some general information and comments. The writer has interviewed Verhoeven before and describes his personailty well.

Von Holland nach Hollywood An article about Paul in German.

San Diego Comic Con An interview from the HME, by the guys over at Joe Blo's Movie Emporium. Paul discusses Hollow Man, the DVD format, and a couple possible future projects.

Paul Verhoeven (pasadizo.com) A lengthy article about Paul's career, both his Dutch and American eras. In Spanish.

Movie Interview This is from the HME but also includes a general sumup of his career and feelings on the Dutch and American film industries. Short but informative.

Verhoeven bounces back with latest film An interview discussing Starship Troopers and the failure of Showgirls.

Triumph of the Ill This HME interview with the Village Voice conveys Paul's personality well. He talks about his attraction to violence and discusses the controversies surrounding Starship Troopers and Showgirls.

Jesus in the Movies This article from 1998 talks about Verhoeven's involvement with the Jesus Seminar and his plans for a movie based on the life of Christ. It includes quotes from an interview with Paul.

Dutch Interview with Paul Verhoeven Someone translated parts of a Verhoeven interview in a Dutch magazine for Ain't It Cool News. Paul refers to projects that haven't gotten off the ground, e.g. Crusades and the Houdini project.

Etre invisible? Non merci! This interview in French discusses Hollow Man as well as Paul's frustration with Hollywood.

Interview mit Paul Verhoeven An interview from the HME in German. They discuss some other stuff besides Hollow Man, but since I can only translate about one out of every 10 words I can't give you an overview.

Paul Verhoeven (canoe.ca) A bunch of short articles and interviews with Verhoeven, from 1997-2000.

Boxoffice Magazine Cover: Director Paul Verhoeven This article is from just before the release of Starship Troopers. It basically just gives a description of the movie and has a few quotes from Verhoeven. There is a little bit of his childhood (WWII) history thrown in there as well.

Paul Verhoeven and his hollow men This is an actual scholarly paper about Paul Verhoeven's movies. It even has endnotes!

Paul Verhoeven: A brief Encounter A brief interview with Verhoeven at the Dutch premiere of Hollow Man and some decent pics.

La Existencia del Mal This article on an Argentinian film site has a brief biography of Verhoeven and goes on to cover each of his major Dutch and American films. A good primer. In Spanish.

De Cirkel Is Rond Is it just me or does Verhoeven sound almost the same in Dutch as he does in English? Anyway, this interview (in Dutch) done in April 2002 discusses some of Paul's upcoming projects and, um, other stuff I can't translate because I don't know Dutch. Dang.

Terug naar Kuifje: een interview met Paul Verhoeven After looking at 20 or 30 Dutch pages, it's not so hard to read them anymore. "Paul Verhoeven is één van de meest succesvolle Nederlandse regisseurs ooit." It's practically English, for crying out loud. Who do those Dutch think they're fooling? Anyway, here is yet another interview from the Netherlands Fantasy Film Festival (April 2002) in which Paul talks about upcoming projects and stuff.

Jigsaw Lounge - Paul Verhoeven Interview Hey, guess what? It's another interview from the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival. Surprise! But as luck would have it, this one is in English. The interviewer even describes Paul's clothes for that "You are there" feeling. This interview is quite interesting and insightful, with a wide range of topics covered, and don't forget to look for the part where Verhoeven uses the word "yeah" four times in a row.

A Conversation with Director Paul Verhoeven In this interview from the HME Paul talks about his feelings on the DVD format and the history of his film career. He also lists his two favorite American films that he's made.

Paul Verhoeven - Interview This interview from the HME was conducted at the Locarno Film Festival in 2000. It's mostly just about Hollow Man, but there are some interesting quotes.

A Talk with Paul Verhoeven This is a pretty good interview (again from the Hollow Man Era) talking about the release of Hollow Man on DVD, Starship Troopers, and "the pressure to 'protect children' from Hollywood."

Barnes & Noble.com Interview This interview from January 2001 is mostly about the special effects in Hollow Man and its release to DVD. If you've read other interviews with Verhoeven about Hollow Man, you'll see him recycling the same quotes here.

The (Un)Hollow Man A little talk with Verhoeven discussing his views on American vs European filmmaking and sexuality in his movies.

Interview met Paul Verhoeven A short Dutch interview at the premiere of Hollow Man (August 2000). This page has a couple good photos of Verhoeven.

Xpose #47 Interview An excerpt of an interview/article from the HME.

BBC Films Interview A very short interview concerning Hollow Man.

Interview mit Paul Verhoeven This is from the time Starship Troopers came out. Paul talks about other life in the universe, Showgirls and Starship Troopers, and going to America. My favorite quote: "[Meine Frau] sagte: 'Schluß jetzt mit dem Träumen, wir klemmen die Kinder unter den Arm und ziehen nach L.A.' Und so geschah es." I tell you, my German is really coming along reading these interviews.

Talking Troopers This interview with Casper Van Dien and Paul Verhoeven about Starship Troopers is pretty amusing. They discuss the infamous shower scene among other things.

Cinescape: Hollow Man-Paul Verhoeven, Part 1 A long interview all about the filming of Hollow Man. Definitely worth a look if you are interested in the more technical aspects of the film. Not sure whatever happened to Part 2, but I can't find it on the Cinescape site.

Directing Hollow Man: Paul Verhoeven This is another article at Cinescape, but it's more about Starship Troopers than Hollow Man despite the title.

Ecran Noir/Paul Verhoeven A filmography and essay about Paul's career, as well as a few quotes and links. In French.

Buy a piece of Verhoeven

Paul Verhoeven (book) Yes, someone has written a book on Paul Verhoeven. It's out of print but you can pick it up used (and cheap) via the Z-Shops at Amazon. I highly recommend this, since it's an authorized biography and pretty much the only definitive source of Verhoeven info you'll find. It's also a darn good read.

Paul Verhoeven: Beyond Flesh and Blood I'm pretty sure this book, by Jean-Marc Bouineau, is in French despite its English title. It's 10.99 British pounds, which I believe is about $569 American dollars. See also this other book by the same guy. Hmm. I may be forced to open a UK Amazon account...

Showgirls: Portrait of a Film Another one you can pick up cheap at Amazon. This has text by Verhoeven and photographs by, well, people who are not Verhoeven. For a review of this and other Verhoeven books, check out my book review page.

Writers on Directors This is basically a photograph book with little essays on many different directors. It has one on Paul Verhoeven so I was forced to buy it. There's a full-page pic of him as well, but it's kind of bizarro and not worth buying the book over unless you're obsessed like I am. Maybe someday I'll get randy and scan it. You can also buy the photo separately here, but it costs more than the book does.

DVD Empire This is one of the cheapest places to get new DVDs. I haven't ordered from them yet but they have the lowest prices I've seen on the individual Anchor Bay DVDs. If you don't want to buy the whole set at once, this is probably the way to go.

DVD Box Office Another good place to get DVDs, this Canadian site sometimes has lower prices than US sites. They also have lots of Canadian-only releases and free shipping, not to mention a huge collection of obscure titles. They have the Paul Verhoeven Collection (i.e. his five Dutch movies from Anchor Bay) for $84.63 US, which is about as cheap as you'll find it anywhere.

Amazon.com The old standby, the place that gets half my yearly income. Damn that one-click ordering system!

Das kalte Herz Believe it or not there is another movie director named Paul Verhoeven. This is a link to one of the films of the "other" Verhoeven. He also has another movie called "Der Jugendrichter." I'm just putting these here so you won't be confused (as I was) when one day you are surfing the German Amazon site and come upon these "lost" Paul Verhoeven films. Then again maybe I'm the only person obsessed enough to be doing that. Hmm.

Jesus Seminar Forum This is the homepage for the Jesus Seminar, a group devoted to the scholarly, secular study of Jesus Christ as a historical figure. Verhoeven is the only "layperson" (meaning he doesn't have a degree in some field of religious study) who is considered informed enough to vote with the Seminar's governing board. If you are obsessed like me, you can go to the site and get a thrill out of finding his name and academic credential listed.

Rutger Hauer Official Site This site used to have some cool pictures of Verhoeven's Dutch productions. Unfortunately they switched the site around and are now charging to look at things. (!) Anyway, I am listing it only because Rutger was in so many of Paul's films and you may therefore be interested.
